Chennai Trekkers frequently organizes treks/outings for the less privileged in our society.

Here are some suggestions from our members. Additional ideas are welcome.

[rupaa2mba@gmail.com]

I know a place in valasaravakkam near vadapalani.its a home where you can see AIDS infected and affected children, from 1 month to 20 yrs.i can help you with the contact details by this evg.do let me know your views..sexually abused children are also there.

[nandi555@gmail.com]

I know a couple who runs a residenial school children affected by child labour.. if interested do let me know i can talk to them..

[rolasangtam@gmail.com]

I may sound a little too ambitious but I am thinking out aloud. We can build a database of our members whose hobbies and interests/talents we could use to come up something creative. It could be anything from painting, singing, dancing, theatre to puppetry/mimicry...or even storytelling sessions! I know we have a large talent pool in the CTC family. Once we build this database, we can organise workshops/ day out with activities etc. If this is something interesting, I can help to organise and be actively participate in searching the talent, maintaining the database with some help, organise the workshops etc. I can also work on pullling a database of all existing NGOs, Organisation Bodies doing Social Work ...genuine ones whose objectives would match ours...We could collaborate with NGOs which I am willing to work for as well...We could start our own CTC NGO for social work! I hope you are as excited as I am :) ]

Let me know and we can develop this further!!

[sayekiren@gmail.com]

nice to hear that CTC is also doing a great job on the social front. I work for an NGO called Deepam ( www.deepam.in). our vision is to have computer literacy for the under privileged kids. we are a very small group and we currently run 4 centers around besant nagar catering to around 100 children.

it would be great if we could engage and work out something for the kids

[sukan1605@gmail.com]

This is Sukanya here. Remember my sis-in-law Rani and me joined for a Nagala trek on Jan 26th. I work for a NGO that interacts with different NGO's and I had spoken to Hope Foundation earlier on a trek for their school children. The school is free for kids from the Thoraipakkam slums and the Principal was very interested.

We have many other such organisations with children for whom this kind of a trek would be an eyeopener and a real novelty for them. Please let me know how I can help.

[rathnakanth.ji@gmail.com]

The Spastics Soceity of Tamil Nadu is located near Ascendas.
Its a school that provides education to special children. But I believe that all of these children are not orphans(some might be).
Many of them live with their parents and attend school here.

Another place I know of is called 'Mercy Home'. This is located at Kilpauk and is managed by Nuns from a Church in the same location. But this one is for aged people. They also have a day care center for the underpriveleged children.

But with both these instituitions, we have to find out if there are orphan/under-priveleged children for whom we can organize a picnic.
Just my 2 cents...

[ananth.tm@gmail.com]

(1) How about charging our guys 50 Rs extra per head for couple of treks, like how we did for Kalrayan trek?
The extra money used to educate a needy child.

(2) I know you wont like this idea, this is un-CTC-isque: conduct couple of corporate treks, charge them more, and donate proceeds

I'll try to hook up with my company's CSR division to see what can be done.

[karthick.sundararajan@gmail.com]

I know an orphanage near my home - Udhavum Ullangal in Adambakkam (Translated: Helping Hearts - I am a regular visitor there) It homes around 80 sweet kids from 1st grade to 10th grade. I can co-ordinate if we feel like taking them for some outing.

I also know a group of visually challenged students, who would have never gone to picnics. But since they can only feel about what is happening and I guess it is hard to take them for a TREK. Maybe if you can think of something that could make them happy, we shall try organizing one. (I know them since I go as a scribe or reader during their exams). They are all college students and working people.

[hisaibye@gmail.com]

I strongly feel that "Offering Education" is very important. We can contribute in whatever way we could here like Supporting the students in paying their fees, Supporting Schools for better infrastructure like Libraries, Better Sanitization, Taking some classes for the needy etc., But I do not want to mix it with the trekking group. We can either start a separate group (or) spread the message across to individuals whom we know of. Most of these service activities take a lot of time. So we have to be a bit careful, before we commit.

FYI, I am part of couple of other groups doing similar functions. I can help you in organizing it. You can visit http://www.helpingminds.org to see some of the activities done by one of the groups.

If you want to get started, we can start with sponsoring a Library sponsorships for a school. We can have a library named after Chennai Trekkers. I have attached a presentation on the same.

[ravisghosh@gmail.com]

You may include ppl in old-age homes too. Their life will just be changed with his 1-day visit out of their home.

Secondly, from K-M trek, we have some money left and ppl are not taking refund!! Samyak is going to send a mail asking ppl to either take refund or we will give this money for some social cause. Lets see how many want their money back.

[ratan.hari@gmail.com]

I have a few names
I shall talk to you soon

[ranjithh18@gmail.com]

We can try to  collect  amount from our trekkers. If we collect an amount of nearly a 1 lakh (I think it is possible if u post). We can call Chief Conservator or DFO from chennai as chief guest and contribute the amount to the welfare cost. So we hit our two targets at the same time.

With regard to the clarity of our discussion, I would request you to draft us the non-possibility of taking the special kids for trekking inside the forest and the possibility of gathering the kids in some place either for a movie, a party together or some sort of fun activity.  We would be happy to have your valuable advice and innovative idea on keeping the kids happy for a day by us.

I have copied Mr. Peter, who is heading our Chennai Trekking Club – www.chennaitrekkers.org

We are anxious to hear from you at the earliest.  Thanks a ton for your valuable time for us.

[ahcampbell@hotmail.co.uk]

I've been meaning to mention this to you for sometime actually - I work for The Banyan and organisation that looks after homeless women with mental health problems who are all desperate for a trip out of Adaikalam (the transit-care home). I thought on the next trek I'd mention it to you, but since this has come up I thought I'd raise the issue now.

Perhaps we can discuss over the weekend? Do you think this could be a possible venture?

[kn.naresh@gmail.com]

We used to go on regular visit to orphanages. We find an orphanage/home that is in most needy situation, visit them and ask them for the most significant things (Books/Racks/Stationery/Clothes/Food) that they are in need off. We refrain from giving any cash, but buy them stuffs they need to our level best and have a meal with them all. We organize some games and play along with the kids.

I have the list of homes/orphanages we visited which are run by individuals with limited or no support.

[arulsekar@gmail.com]

In fact i was just talking to the tribal village
person in Dindigul in trying to understand what we could get (instead
of cash ) ... This is the place where I am planning to organize
another trek ( with a social cause - trying to help the kids education
thr).
thinking of this trek during 30-31 of this month

[padirag@gmail.com]

Of late I have been meeting some elderly people who are keen on
enjoying nature.
They may not be deprived financially but are nevertheless often lonely
and feel neglected by the younger generation.
Would giving them a chance to experience unspoilt nature, without too
much physical strain, be a good idea?

[ratan.hari@gmail.com]

I suggest that we take elderly people out on treks on a regular basis. Half way through the trek a nice spot is to be identified where they can wait while the youngsters go on and return to join them on the way down.
This way we would involve those cannot do tough treks fully but also have the opportunity to experience nature.

[satyareddy.iitm@gmail.com]

On the same day of your email to CTC, I came accross this community
supporting HIV affected Children in The Hindu.
http://www.mellowcircle.com/prathyasha.html

[sathitharan@gmail.com]

Being a group united with the love for trekking, I suggest we
concentrate in our core competency i.e. trekking for social cause too.

We can build a social cause fund by contributing a small amount every
time we trek ( can be included with the trek expenses ) and we can
then use this fund to take underprivilaged, orphaned people on a fun
filled trek.

We need not promote trekking, we should aim taking the pleasure of
trekking and nature to the socially underprivilaged class, especially
the kids as this will make them understand and love nature. So that
they grow up to be environmentally responsible citizens.

[click4anand@gmail.com]

Is it possible to add a check box in the registration form where in we can ask the participate if he/she is willing to donate to the
orphanage/charity and we can collect the corresponding amount during the trek.

What would be an ideal time interval between two social treks?
Keeping aside the organizing work, from the volunteering trekkers' point of view?

Frequency will be determined by our ability to contact new orphan homes. I got two in the pipeline. One is fixed on 6 Dec.

Re: Introduction

Ansar
One Social trek per month and one Orphanage Visit per month should be an ideal average...
